Animal Tool Behavior: The Use and Manufacture of Tools by Animals

This is the revised edition of a book published in 1980, the first book containing all the existing literature on the making and use of tools by nonhuman animals. The author, Benjamin B. Beck, demonstrated that very diverse ...
animal species – from insects to primates – make use of various materials and tools in order to solve a large variety of problems. This overview has inspired many people to investigate the use of tools in various species.

For the revised, 2011 edition, Beck received assistance from two other authors. The three of them have provided a look at the current (as of 2010) state of affairs regarding this topic. An exact definition for the use of tools is given, as well as new ways of using tools that have appeared in the literature. All known forms of tool making are discussed, and myths about tool use are brought to the fore. Specific examples of tool use by invertebrates, birds, fish and mammals are provided; these indicate how it differs from use by advanced animals.
