Trogons: A Natural History of the Trogonidae

Trogons are a group of birds known chiefly for their splendid colours. This large, beautifully executed book truly does the birds justice. It is a coffee table book with marvellous illustrations of the trogons in their natural habitat, but it is also ...
the first book to provide such extensive information on trogons. One widely known bird from the trogon family is the quetzal. These birds, sacred to the Mayas and the Aztecs, has such a long tail that it hangs out of the nest during brooding. Still, not much has been known about trogons. Most studies were done in the 1930s and 1940s in Costa Rica and Guatemala. Gradually more is being learned about trogons and their ancestry. At the same time, the natural habitat of most trogon species, the tropical forest, is increasingly endangered. This book thus focuses on both what is known about the trogons and on how these birds can be protected from extinction through forest conservation.

Forshaw is a renowned Australian ornithologist who has authored several books on a variety of bird species. Gilbert is a very well-known bird artist and noted illustrator of diverse works.
