Last Thursday was made known that the giant panda Xiang Xiang, that was released in the wild last year, has died. Xiang Xiang was the first panda born in captivity who was released back into the wild. He was found ...
on the 19th of February already in the snowy forests in the Sihuan province. He had been released there not even a year before.

The Wolong research centre for giant pandas reports that he died from injuries caused by a fall. The death of the panda has been thoroughly investigated. This is why the news has only now been made public. According to a spokesperson of the centre, Xiang Xiang may have fallen from a tree when he was chased by other pandas.
Xiang Xiang was released April last year, having endured a three year training program to teach him how to survive in the wild. According to the research centre Xiang’s death shows that wild pandas don’t easily accept a male outsider. For this reason, the next panda to be released will be a female, said the centre’s assistant manager, Li Desheng.
Xiang Xiang has been buried at the foot of a mountain.
